It's a well-known fact* that eskimoes have a great many words for snow**. Still, few know why.
Put it like this:
Normal people in normal cultures have (regrettably, I have to add) to develop something like GreenPeace - and that only is so, because there is only one name for the shade of green appropriate for naming a Peace after.
It's much more complicted with the eskimoes, though (only the more so for arabs, for that matter).
So, when one eskimo wonders whether the other one is in Light-sort-of-old-saladyPeace, he might be given a pat on the back and invited into the Dark-rich-agava-likeishPeace, which is so much more two thumbs^ up about the environment.
As for the more snow-themed analogue of this dialogue, don't ask.
Just don't.
____
* - a thing you'd be better of trusting
** - it is, however, a less-well-know fact that the same is true for arabs and sand, and, more or less, for any group of sapient beings and a surrounding natural (although, one has to concede, not neccessarily) abundancy
^ - a silly thing to do, being an eskimo. Still, an equivalent hasn't yet been found.
** - Babylonians should've had quite a vocabulary for gold...
ReplyDeleteAbout as much as Aztecs for blood.
And an eskimo with two thumbs up is a sight, indeed... : )
